Raison D’être
It’s a French phrase which literally means, “reason to be.” According to Merriam-Webster it is to be understood as “the reason for which a person or organization exists.” Or, further, “the thing that is most important to someone or something.”
Given the turbulent religious landscape of our day and the conflicting currents even within evangelical Christianity, it’s wise for every church to regularly ask: what is our reason for being? What is most important? Why do we exist? What is our raison d’être?
A good, short, biblical statement of our reason for being at Ingleside is this:
to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ.
Do you hear the words of Jesus in this sentence? In Matthew 28:19, a passage we sometimes refer to as The Great Commission, he said, “Go therefore and make disciples” (ESV). That’s what is most important. That’s why we exist. That’s our raison d’être!
