Standing for Life

My wife, Beverly, and I plan to be among those who gather in the public square in Macon tomorrow to say:  “We are on the side of life!”  I hope you will join us. The rally is Friday, January 24, at noon in Rosa Parks Square (the corner of First and Poplar; just in front of the Government Center).  Reverend Chip Miller, the Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church, will be the keynote speaker. Then, at 12:30 p.m. the Silent March will occur – from Rosa Parks Square to The...

Building a Culture of Life

Followers of Jesus Christ believe that every person is created in the image of God and should be treated with dignity and respect (Genesis 1:26-26; cf. Matthew 19:4). To affirm that all people are image-bearers of God means that we must reject every sinful mistreatment of others and we must work to protect the weak, the powerless, the vulnerable – including orphans, widows, those with disabilities, those abused and trafficked, the aged and infirm, and, yes, even those being knit...

“Should I be a member?” Five Good Reasons

Are you a member at Ingleside yet?  If not, I hope to see you in our membership class this Sunday afternoon, January 12, at 4:00 p.m. Here are five good reasons to take this important step. First, membership—both the word and the concept—is biblical.  1 Corinthians 12:27 says: “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it” (NASB).  God expects those who follow Christ to be members of his body, the church.  That means a vital and committed connection to other...

What’s Your Heart Condition?

If the doctor wants to know the condition of your heart, he may measure your pulse rate, take your blood pressure, listen with a stethoscope, or run an EKG. If necessary, he might even do a heart catheterization to see if there are any blockages, to measure blood flow, or to identify problems with the heart valves. The point is that there are tests we can run to reveal the overall health of our heart. In a similar way, Jesus gives us a test that is a sure indicator of the spiritual...

Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude

When our lives are transformed by God’s grace and filled with the Spirit, one of the results will be a grateful heart.  We will approach every day, every relationship, and every circumstance with a bias toward giving thanks. Perhaps that’s why the Apostle Paul mentions gratitude and thanksgiving three different times in the space of just six verses (Colossians 3:12-16) that describe who we are and how we are to live in Christ.  This powerful passage concludes by saying: And...
