The Growth Bias of Healthy Churches

Jesus gave us our marching orders.  He said, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19, ESV). That’s why at our church we often say, “Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the glory of God.” It means that we have a “growth bias” when it comes to disciple- making.  We want to make disciples -- as many as we can and as mature as we can. By God’s grace, the disciples we are committed to making . . . Repent and believe the gospel, Are baptized as...

Grateful for 30 Years!

Not many churches and pastors – the data suggests fewer than 3.5% -- have the privilege of doing what we have done over the past few days as we have marked a 30-year ministry milestone together. As Beverly and I reflect on this three-decade journey and the celebration of the last week, our hearts are filled to overflowing with gratitude.  We are eager to say with the Psalmist that the Lord has “dealt bountifully” with us (Psalm 13:6, ESV).  We know that from start to finish it is...

That Church, This Church, My Church

There’s more than one way to refer to and relate to a church.  Consider the following perspectives. That church.  “Yes, I’ve heard about that church,” a person might say.  “I’ve heard that church has great ministries for children and students.  I’ve heard that church is really committed to missions.  I’ve heard that church has spirit-anointed musical worship and solid biblical teaching.” But have you ever been there?  Have you ever checked it out and...

Partnerships worth Celebrating

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the believers in the church at Philippi, he made it a priority to celebrate their partnership. As the letter begins, Paul says: I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. (Philippians 1:3-5, ESV) Like Paul, I want to celebrate several dimensions of our partnership in the gospel today. Partnership in...

What’s Your Next Step?

One of the great themes of this life the Lord has given us is that of progress. Consider the stages of growth. We begin as a dependent infant and move through various phases of physical, mental, and emotional development. Consider our salvation. Repenting and believing in Christ is a spark of spiritual growth, not a fizzling-out flame that leaves us in our sinful patterns. Consider our relationships. Long-term commitment where you make concerted and often difficult efforts to know a person...

Membership Class this Sunday

Did you know that “membership” is a biblical idea? Romans 12:4-5 says: “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another” (ESV).  The same truth is found in 1 Corinthians 12. Membership communicates your commitment to the Lord and to the other members of the body.  It says, “I’m all in.  You can count on me.  I will participate, give, and...
