Growing Gospel Influence

The images in Isaiah 54 are striking.  “Enlarge the place of your tent,” God says to his people.  “Let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back, lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.” For a nomadic people, it was an exhortation to prepare for the growth and expansion that would accompany God’s favor and blessing. Have you noticed?  Just such a season of growth and expansion is occurring at Ingleside.  Our tent is enlarging.  We are...

Introduce a Friend

There may well be no better time to introduce a friend to Ingleside than at Christmas.  So, I hope you will ask the Lord about whom you should invite.  Then, make the call, or send the text or email.  Your personal invitation could make all the difference. As you make your plans, remember that we will have five great, musical celebrations of the birth of Jesus Christ this weekend, called The Joy of Christmas. Friday, December 11, 7:00 p.m. Saturday, December 12, 4:00 p.m. and...

Happy Thanksgiving! . . . and More

On October 3, 1789, at the request of Congress, the first president of the United States issued a proclamation which reads in part: Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and...

What’s the Next Step?

Many of the words the Bible uses to describe what it means to be a disciple of Jesus imply movement. Consider the call that Jesus extended to his first disciples.  He often said:  “Follow me.”  To be his disciple meant leaving where you were and going with him. It’s no wonder then that life in Christ is often described in the remainder of the New Testament as a “walk.”  The Apostle Paul would write:  “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him”...

Witness: Adventures in Acts

This past Sunday, I began a new, five-part series of Sunday morning messages at Ingleside entitled, Witness: Adventures in Acts. As we began, we noted that Acts 1:8 provides the overall outline and primary theme of the entire book.  It’s really a verse that every Christ-follower should have memorized.   Do you remember what it says? After forty days of post-resurrection appearances and before he ascended to the Father, Jesus said this to his disciples: “But you will receive...

Choosing the Team

Choosing the team may well be a leader’s most important single responsibility.  Only when the right players are in the right positions does any team maximize their opportunity for success. In a 2001 business bestseller, Good to Great, Jim Collins put it this way.  Good-to-great leaders “first got the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats” (p. 13).  Everything else was secondary. For successful college football coaches this is...
